Greater Hells Canyon Council
Place to Place — People to Place — People to People
Take part in our council and be a part of our vision of a Greater Hells Canyon Region of abundant, biodiverse, and connected lands and waters where all wild species and human communities thrive.
Greater Hells Canyon Council is a grassroots conservation organization founded in 1967 (as Hells Canyon Preservation Council) to stop Hells Canyon and the Snake River from being dammed. Our advocacy helped keep the Snake flowing freely through Hells Canyon, was instrumental in the creation of the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area, and continues today by focusing on the ecological connectivity and its connection with human communities across much of the Blue Mountains.
We invite you to learn more about our work and join us in our mission to connect, protect, and restore the wild lands, waters, native species and habitats of the Greater Hells Canyon Region, ensuring a legacy of healthy ecosystems for future generations.
Where We work
We work across the Blue Mountains at the nexus of the Rocky Mountains, the Cascades, the Great Basin and the Columbia Plateau. Defined by its rural character, with low population density, extensive public lands, wild free-flowing rivers, undulating hills, high mountain peaks, and North America’s deepest river canyon, this is a land of abundance, connection, and resilience. From the coffee shops and meeting rooms to the river canyons and wildflower meadows, our council comes together on behalf of this amazing region.
