Where We work
Welcome to the Greater Hells Canyon Region, a vast landscape of mountains, mixed-conifer forests, wild rivers, and North America's deepest canyon.
The Greater Hells Canyon Region
Get to know our mission area that spans 18,000 square miles of Northeast Oregon, Southeast Washington, and West Central Idaho. From the Wild and Scenic Snake River through Hells Canyon to the majestic peaks of the Wallowas and Eagle Cap Wilderness, this place is big enough to matter!
The Blue

Mountains Trail
Experience our mission area by hiking some or all of the Blue Mountains Trail, a 530-mile long distance hiking route through the region, from Joseph to John Day. Launched in 2021, and recognized shortly thereafter as an Oregon Signature Trail, the BMT highlights why this region is so special.
Our Work

Protecting
Public Lands
Advocating for the Hells Canyon NRA and the Wallowa Whitman, Umatilla and Malheur National Forests.
Blue Mountains Trail
A 530-mile route through the region that supports trail maintenance, conservation, regional ecological awareness and the rural recreation economy.
Camas to Condors
Supporting Nimiipuu tribal communities through climate action, wildlife reintroduction and access to land-based learning and gathering on ancestral tribal lands.
Stewardship
Implementing low-tech, process-based riparian restoration, beaver surveys, endemic and threatened species monitoring and more volunteer-based activities.
Beaver Coexistence
A partnership with tribes, public agencies and watershed councils working with private landholders to solve beaver conflicts and keep beavers on the land.
Wild Blues
Artist-in-Residence
Offering a unique opportunity for artists to tell the story of Refugia of the Blue Mountains through creative expression.
Get Involved

From volunteering in the field and supporting our advocacy work, to joining our Council and making a tax-deductible financial contribution, there are many ways get involved in our mission.
Become a Member
Making a one-time or monthly donation, legacy giving, and other forms or financial support are critical to sustaining our program work across the region.

This is the summer hiking and outdoors festival you don’t want to miss. Greater Hells Canyon Council staff will be there to share information and connect with the Blue Mountains Trail community alongside some of our favorite business sponsors and many other outdoor brands and trail groups. If you are a part of the long-distance hiking community, a trails enthusiast, or just love a good party with great food, drinks, and fun people, come join us!
